# Upstream timeout

> upstream_timeout: HTTP 503, retryable.

| | |
| - | - |
| Code | `upstream_timeout` |
| HTTP status | `503` |
| Retryable | Yes |
| Python | `vaquill.InternalServerError` |
| TypeScript | `InternalServerError` |

## What it means

A service the API depends on did not answer in time.
The call is refunded.

## What to do

Retry with exponential backoff.
Honour `Retry-After` when it is present.
The SDKs retry this code automatically.

## Example response

`retryAfterSeconds` appears only when the response carries a `Retry-After` header.
The `detail` text is illustrative.

```json theme={"theme":"github-light"}
{
  "type": "https://www.vaquill.ai/docs/errors/upstream_timeout",
  "title": "Upstream timeout",
  "status": 503,
  "detail": "Upstream service timed out",
  "code": "upstream_timeout",
  "retryable": true,
  "requestId": "3f2b8c1e-5a7d-4e9b-9c34-0d6a1b2f7e58"
}
```

## In the SDKs

The Python SDK raises `InternalServerError` and the TypeScript SDK raises `InternalServerError`.
Both expose `code`, `retryable`, the request id and the retry hint.
See [Error codes](https://vaquill.ai/docs/errors/index.md) for the full table and attribute names.
